On the Chinese Pyramids: A Dichotomy of Causes, Evolution and Consequences∗

چکیده
Using hand-collected data, we study the evolution, causes, and economic effects of the pyramidal ownership structure in China’s listed firms over 2001-2008. We quantitatively characterize the use of pyramidal structure by private firms and local state controlled firms. We find that private owners in China show strong incentives to build more extensive pyramids in weak institutional environments but government owners do not. We also find that the sophistication level of pyramids, measured by the number of layers and the deviation of control from ownership, is negatively associated with private firms’ stock market performance and operating performance; but we fail to identify the same evidence in local state controlled firms. In-depth analysis shows that tunneling, high cost of capital, and lower investment efficiency drive the negative relation between pyramidal structure and private firms’ performance. Our work suggests that private owners and government owners may build pyramids for different reasons and that state ownership and private ownership have different implications for economic effects of pyramidal structure. متن کاملThe Causes and Consequences of the Crustal Dichotomy and Their Implications for the Early Evolution of Mars
Introduction: The two most striking surface features on Mars are the crustal dichotomy and the Tharsis Rise [1]. While it is generally accepted that the Tharsis Rise is formed as a result of plume related volcanism [2], the formation mechanism for the crustal dichotomy is controversial with two main competing proposals: endogenic (mantle convection and flow) [3-5] and exo-genic (mega-impact) me...

متن کامل“self-oblivion” in the Ground of “self-Alienation” with an Emphasis on Rumi’s Viewpoint
With a language of poem, allegory and elegant sentences, Rumi attempts to explore meaning and its causes, consequences and finally some solutions for its remedy in his own works. For him, human has a divine identity from which he has been cast away because of descent and has been involved in self-oblivion. What makes this initial mandatory oblivion more severe is dependence and association with...
